U.S. Stock Markets Closed for Presidents' Day
In honor of George Washington's birthday, which is popularly celebrated as Presidents' Day, major U.S. stock markets including the NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) will not be open for trading on Monday, February 19th. The pause in trading allows market participants to pay tribute to past U.S. presidents.
Reopening After the Holiday
Following the commemorative closure, normal market activities are scheduled to recommence on Tuesday, February 20th. This includes the various exchanges where stocks, bonds, and other securities are traded.
Bond Market and Federal Holidays
Aligned with the stock markets, the U.S. bond market will also observe Presidents' Day, ceasing operations for the day. This practice follows the guidelines set by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
Presidents' Day is a federal holiday that emerged from the Uniform Holiday Bill, signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968. The bill aimed to provide more long weekends for workers by moving the observance of certain holidays to Mondays. Presidents' Day is one of these holidays.
2024 Stock Market Holiday Schedule
In 2024, Presidents' Day is the third stock market holiday, after closures for New Year's Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The next planned closure will be for Good Friday, which falls on March 29th.
Additional market holidays for the year include Memorial Day on May 27th, Juneteenth on June 19th, Independence Day on July 4th, Labor Day on September 2nd, Thanksgiving on November 28th, and Christmas on December 25th.
It is important for investors to keep the holiday schedule in mind when planning their trading and investment strategies throughout the year.
