London Stock Exchange Opens Doors to Bitcoin and Ether Exchange-Traded Notes

Published March 11, 2024

In a landmark decision, the London Stock Exchange (LSE) has announced that it will begin accepting applications for the admission of exchange-traded notes (ETNs) based on the cryptocurrencies bitcoin (BTC-USD) and ethereum (ETH-USD). These crypto-backed securities, however, are designated exclusively for professional investors to trade. This decision comes as a part of the exchange's efforts to innovate within the financial markets while ensuring a certain degree of investor protection.

Regulatory Stance and Investor Safety

The LSE's move lines up with the United Kingdom's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)'s latest guidance on cryptocurrency asset exchange-traded notes. The FCA has indicated that while it will not oppose Recognized Investment Exchanges in their efforts to establish a UK-listed market segment for cryptoasset-backed exchange traded notes, these should be aimed at professional investors. The institutions considered 'professional investors' typically include investment firms and credit institutions.

The regulatory body reinforces its viewpoint that products like cETNs and crypto derivatives might not be suitable for retail consumers due to the high risks involved. It emphasizes that the crypto market's volatility and lack of regulation make it a high-risk investment space, warning potential retail investors that they should be ready to incur significant losses if they decide to partake.

The State of Crypto Markets

As the LSE introduces this new segment for trading crypto ETNs, the performance of bitcoin and ether is notably strong. Bitcoin has soared, setting new records, and in a recent 24-hour period, its value increased by 3.1%, peaking over $72,000. In the same timeframe, ether experienced a gain of 3.3%, with its price reaching approximately $4,060. These trends bolster the demand for more institutional-grade investment products tied to cryptocurrencies.

The FCA and other U.K. authorities are in the process of developing a more robust regulatory framework for cryptoassets. Their goal is to establish clear guidelines that protect investors and support the growth of innovative financial technologies while collaborating with international partners and industry stakeholders.
