Robinhood Targets UK Expansion, Aiming to Bring US Stock Trading Across the Atlantic

Published November 30, 2023

Robinhood, the online trading platform that revolutionized commission-free trading in the United States, now sets its sights on international horizons. With ambitions to become a global entity, the trading giant has its eyes on the British market, announcing a major expansion that would introduce US stock trading to UK investors.

Aspiring for Global Reach

CEO Vladimir Tenev, in a recent conversation with Bloomberg, underscored Robinhood's commitment to its global mission. According to Tenev, launching in the United Kingdom is a critical move in Robinhood's ongoing pursuit of international presence. The expansion represents a new chapter as the company works to unlock global markets for its user base.

A Warm Up for the British Investors

In preparation for its UK debut, Robinhood has initiated a waitlist, providing early access for enthusiastic British traders aiming to get a head start. Tenev shared plans to open access in a phased approach, welcoming all UK investors to the platform by early 2024. He expressed confidence in Robinhood's ability to meet the unique demands of the UK market, particularly their interest in US stocks and dollars.

Trading Around the Clock

With the UK launch, Robinhood is set to offer a roster of 6,000 US stocks to British traders. Moreover, the platform will include the convenience of 24-hour trading—a feature recently introduced in the US market, aimed to give investors the flexibility to trade beyond traditional market hours.

Past Efforts and Future Vision

Robinhood's latest expansion efforts are not its first attempt to enter the UK market. In 2019, after securing the nod from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), Robinhood prepared for a UK launch. However, unforeseen circumstances led to a halt in 2020, with the company indefinitely postponing its international endeavors. Now, with renewed focus and determination, Robinhood seeks to fulfill Tenev's vision—rooted in his and co-founder Baiju Bhatt's immigrant background—of making financial services accessible globally.
