Mark Zuckerberg's Meta Plans to Launch Six New AI Wearables in 2025
Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ: META) is gearing up to introduce six new innovative AI-driven wearable devices in 2025, following an announcement by its Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth.
Announcement Context: In an internal memo named "2025: The Year of Greatness," Bosworth emphasized the critical nature of this year for Meta's Reality Labs. He stated, "This year likely determines whether this entire effort will go down as the work of visionaries or a legendary misadventure." The memo was reported on by Business Insider.
Recently, Meta’s Reality Labs unit, responsible for developing augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies, achieved a record revenue of $1.08 billion for the fourth quarter. However, it also reported an unprecedented quarterly operating loss of $4.97 billion, bringing total losses since 2020 to approximately $60 billion.
In response to these financial setbacks, Meta has been working to improve the operational efficiency of Reality Labs, which includes streamlining its leadership structure.
Meta has yet to provide a comment on these developments.
The Importance of This Launch: Bosworth's memo highlighted the company's ongoing commitment to advancing its lineup of wearable technology. He noted, "We need to drive sales, retention, and engagement across the board, particularly in mixed reality. And for our long-term plans to succeed, Horizon Worlds on mobile requires a substantial breakthrough."
Additionally, the company is set to enhance its Ray-Ban smart glasses by integrating displays into them by 2025, aiming to solidify its position in the AR and wearable computing markets.
Meta is reportedly also developing smart glasses under the Oakley brand and exploring AI-powered devices such as smartwatches and earbuds equipped with cameras designed specifically for outdoor enthusiasts like cyclists and athletes. Despite facing challenges and mixed results in the wearable tech sector over the years, Meta remains focused on launching innovative products in AR and AI-powered computing.
In the upcoming year, the company plans to allocate between $60 billion and $65 billion towards capital expenditures aimed at further developing its AI-supported computing infrastructure.
