Monday's Market Movers: Soaring Stocks Despite Market Dip

Published December 4, 2023

As the stock market looked to recede slightly on Monday, tempering its robust gains from November and into the previous week, two particular stocks captured investor attention with significant moves. While overall market indices only slipped by about 0.5% to 1%, investors watched as Hawaiian Holdings and Uber Technologies experienced uplifting news, sending their shares upward in contrast to the general market sentiment.

Hawaiian Holdings Soars on Takeover News

Hawaiian Holdings, the parent company of Hawaiian Airlines, saw its stock price skyrocket, nearly tripling, due to news of a potential acquisition. Alaska Air Group declared intentions to purchase Hawaiian Holdings for $1.9 billion, absorbing $900 million in debt, at a proposed offer of $18 per share—a stark increase over Hawaiian's last close at $4.86 per share.

Alaska Air is looking to expand its operations across the Pacific, eyeing Honolulu as a strategic hub for both US and international routes. They anticipate the acquisition being earnings positive within two years, with potential synergies of up to $250 million. Despite previous setbacks for Hawaiian Holdings, including being dropped from a stock index, this takeover offer has revived interest in the stock, though regulatory approval remains uncertain.

Uber Technologies Climbs with S&P 500 Nod

Shares of Uber Technologies also climbed by 5% in the early hours of Monday, though not due to merger news. Instead, Uber was welcomed into the esteemed S&P 500 index. S&P Dow Jones Indices announced Uber's inclusion following the company's financial success, evidenced by two consecutive profitable quarters and encapsulated by a market cap well over the $100 billion mark.

Uber's new status in the S&P 500 does not alter its core business but enhances its stock visibility and may provide new avenues for capital. Despite selling off its aerial rideshare venture, Uber Elevate, the company might reenter the aviation industry in the future, riding on the coattails of airlines like Hawaiian and Alaska Air.
