Mattel's Stock Woes Persist Amid Barbie Film's Success

Published February 29, 2024

Amid the dazzling success of the 'Barbie' movie, Mattel, the toy giant behind the iconic doll, is experiencing less than stellar stock performance. Despite raking in substantial profits from the film and related doll sales, Mattel's stock has not mirrored this upswing, leading to tensions with investors. The 'Barbie' film's box office triumph, generating almost $1.5 billion globally, and the subsequent rejuvenation of the Barbie brand, bringing in $150 million last year, have not alleviated investor concerns.

Pandemic Surge Dwindles for Mattel's Shares

Mattel saw its share prices soar during the pandemic, but this growth has since plateaued, even with the boost from the 'Barbie' movie and the recent climbs in the stock market. This lackluster performance has attracted the scrutiny of an activist investor, pushing Mattel to strategize anew and prioritize shareholder value.

Activist Investor Pressures Mattel for Change

New York-based hedge fund Barington Capital Group is demanding a shift in Mattel's approach. While not advocating for a sale of Barbie, Barington urges the divestment of other major Mattel brands, Fisher-Price and American Girl. In addition to targeting the company's governance and executive compensation, the hedge fund proposes $2 billion in stock buybacks as a means to enhance returns for investors.

Corporate Governance and Executive Pay Under Fire

Barington's campaign has also sparked discussions around Mattel's corporate governance structure and the compensation of its executives. The fund criticizes the stock-based compensation of Mattel's CEO, Ynon Kreiz, suggesting it is disproportionately high compared to his peers and insists on splitting the dual role of CEO and Board Chairman for better corporate governance.

Future Prospects Amid Industry Challenges

Despite the challenges, Mattel's leadership is confident in their strategy to integrate brand legacy with modern media and the broader toy industry's pivot towards Hollywood. Yet, as toy industry sales face headwinds from inflation and demographic shifts, Mattel focuses on innovation and expanding their product offerings to drive future growth.
