IIFL Finance Stock Dips to Five-Month Low amid Hefty Trading Volume

Published December 22, 2023

In a notable slump, shares of IIFL Finance Ltd witnessed a sharp decline, plunging over 7% to hit their lowest value in more than five months. This drop was set off by a flurry of heavy trades involving the company's stock, catching the attention of market watchers.

Significant Stock Movement

The trading floor was abuzz when IIFL Finance's shares slumped to an all-time low since mid-July with the National Stock Exchange (NSE) recording a significant 7.21% dip during the day, as shares traded at Rs 552.25 each. This downward trend in stock price comes on the heels of transactions involving around 5.8% of IIFL's equity, calculated at 2.21 crore shares, as reported by Bloomberg.

The Influence of Alternative Investments

The consecutive day decline in IIFL Finance's stock price could be linked to recent developments surrounding the company's investment activities. Speculation arose Thursday over the need for the lender to divest an estimated Rs 182.4 crore from alternative investment funds (AIFs). A measure issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) instructs banks and non-bank financial institutions to unravel investments in AIFs, especially those funneling into debtor companies.

Amid these market movements, IIFL's stock continued to show signs of fluctuation, standing at 4.60% below its opening price at Rs 567.80 per share, even as the benchmark Nifty 50 edged up by 0.38% around 10:18 a.m.

Market Sentiments and Analysts' Outlook

Notwithstanding recent declines, IIFL Finance's shares have climbed 17.91% from the start of the year. Trading volumes surged, reaching an astounding 403 times the 30-day average, while the relative strength index (RSI) hovered around 35.03.

The market sentiment towards IIFL Finance appears optimistic, with six analysts recommending a 'buy' according to Bloomberg consensus. Looking at the horizon, the average 12-month price target from analysts suggests a potential 40.6% increase in stock price.
