Analyzing the Odds: Holding Options on Nifty and Bank Nifty

Published January 2, 2024

The stock indexes Nifty and Bank Nifty have been topics of significant interest for options traders, who are keen to understand whether to hold on to their call options in the face of fluctuating support levels. The Nifty index, for instance, has demonstrated good support at the 21,500 mark, seeming to indicate a prevailing bullish sentiment among investors.

Bank Nifty Call Options: A Bullish Streak with Caution

A look at Bank Nifty reveals its bullish trend, though recently, it has shown signs of a slowdown. The nearest support level has been identified at 47,800, suggesting that long positions on the 48200-call option could still be favorable. The advised strategy would be to hold onto the call option until the index reaches the 49,000 threshold, whereupon traders should be wary of a potential dip.

However, should Bank Nifty fall below its support of 47,800, there's a significant chance of a further decline to 47,400 or even 47,000. Such a drop would advise exit from the call option long, as the time decay attached to options could erode profitability despite the short-term bearish trend not being confirmed.

The Stability of Nifty's Support Level

The Nifty, maintaining a bullish trend as well, portrays a similar situation with substantial support at 21,500. As long as this support isn't breached, the recommendation for holders of the 21800-call is to retain their position. Nonetheless, if Nifty drops below this critical support level, traders should consider exiting their positions, keeping in mind the possibility of a fall extending to 21,300 and potentially delaying the rally up to 21,800 before expiration.

In cases where either index consolidates throughout the week, traders may consider opting for January's monthly expiry calls, ideally selecting at-the-money options for better responsiveness to the index. For both options, exiting strategies are clear: liquidate the Nifty call on a rally to 22,200 and the Bank Nifty call if it climbs to 49,000.
