UK Royal Navy Warship Targeted in Largest Incident in Decades

Published January 11, 2024

The UK's Defense Minister Grant Shapps has declared that the recent attack on the Royal Navy vessel, HMS Diamond, in the Red Sea is considered the most critical assault it has faced in many years. On Tuesday, HMS Diamond found itself at the focal point of an aggressive operation, a part of wider hostile actions affecting maritime activities in the Red Sea.

During an urgent call for action, Shapps highlighted the need for a resolution to what is being described as an unsustainable security situation in the region. He expressed his gratitude to the crew of HMS Diamond for their valiant response to the attack.

"Yesterday saw the largest attack on a Royal Navy warship in decades. I'd like to thank the crew of HMS Diamond for their heroic service in the Red Sea, as they continue to defend innocent lives and global trade from these intolerable Houthi attacks," Shapps stated.

The collective defense efforts successfully intercepted eighteen unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) launched by the Houthi, alongside two anti-ship cruise missiles, and one anti-ship ballistic missile. This impressive defensive achievement involved not only HMS Diamond but also several U.S. Navy vessels, showcasing the strong collaboration between allied forces.

The frequency of these confrontations in the Red Sea has been escalating, with the Pentagon highlighting the Houthi attacks' impact on international shipping routes, implicating over 40 nations.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken sharply criticized the incidents, attributing the attacks to support and assistance from Iran. Blinken has warned that if Iran's backing of the Houthis continues, consequences will be inevitable and detrimental to all involved parties.

Amidst escalating concerns, Blinken refrains from detailing potential responses but underscores the gravity of the situation and the unified stance among multiple countries that such acts of aggression must not go unchecked.

In conclusion, as the world's eyes turn to the evolving circumstances in the Red Sea, the HMS Diamond's encounter serves as a stark reminder of the growing challenges and the imperative, cooperative defense required to maintain safety and order on the high seas.
