OpenAI's Influence on Microsoft Remains Uncertain, According to Morgan Stanley

Published November 21, 2023

Despite initial optimism, the partnership between Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and OpenAI, the creator of GPT models, remains unpredictable, Morgan Stanley has reported. There are changes happening within OpenAI that could have future implications for Microsoft.

Microsoft’s Commitment to OpenAI

The Satya Nadella-led Microsoft is focused on maintaining its important relationship with OpenAI, looking ahead at the possibilities for the AI model innovations. Nevertheless, there have been significant shifts in OpenAI's leadership, with Sam Altman and Greg Brockman taking on pivotal roles within the newly established research lab at Microsoft. There are concerns that these changes might lead to disruptions in the growth of ChatGPT and potentially cause setbacks in the innovation timeline for the GPT model.

Leadership Priorities and Actions

Sam Altman has emphasized that his and Nadella's top priority is ensuring OpenAI's continued success, underlining a strong commitment to their partners and customers. On the side of mitigating possible risks, Microsoft has reportedly taken prompt actions to minimize any negative near-term financial impacts.

Keith Weiss and his team of analysts at Morgan Stanley have pointed out that Microsoft is exploring two main strategies regarding OpenAI’s current situation. The first is resolving the issues at OpenAI, reintegrating Altman and Brockman into leadership roles, and forming a new board of directors. The second strategy involves incorporating the OpenAI Research Lab within Microsoft itself, followed by hiring essential engineering talent to pursue research into Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

The Research and Development Dynamic

It is important to distinguish between research and development within software fields. OpenAI focuses on research by creating foundational models such as GPT, whereas development involves turning these research discoveries into practical products, including Azure OpenAI Services or applications using the GPT model like Co-Pilots.

The Importance of Azure and Developer Relations

As a significant Azure client, OpenAI contributed roughly $400 million in revenue in the first quarter alone. The ongoing relationship, however, hinges on the sustained growth of the ChatGPT subscriber base and the investment in continuous improvement of the solutions offered. OpenAI's presence within Microsoft includes two investments totaling around $11 billion and plays a key role for developers who build upon the ChatGPT model. The tech giant's urgency in managing their relationship with Altman and Brockman speaks to this critical need.
