Google Employees Test New AI Mode Search Feature
Google is enhancing its search engine by integrating new AI capabilities. Currently, employees based in the U.S. are testing a feature called "AI Mode." This internal testing was revealed through an email that indicated the new mode would provide an intelligent search experience right within Google Search.
The AI Mode aims to present information in a more accessible way, including neatly organized summaries that link to additional resources across the internet. This feature encourages users to ask more open-ended and exploratory questions, resulting in a conversational search experience.
The AI Mode leverages Google's Gemini 2.0 system, which is accessible for free on its various platforms. However, the version for AI Mode will include tailored functionalities that enhance its reasoning and problem-solving capabilities.
Examples of the types of queries AI Mode can handle include:
- “How many boxes of spaghetti should I buy to feed 6 adults and 10 children, and have enough for seconds?”
- “Compare wool, down, and synthetic jackets in terms of insulation, water resistance, and durability.”
- “What do I need to get started with aquascaping?”
- Follow-up: “What are some nearby stores to buy supplies?”
AI Mode will be functional in both desktop and mobile searches. Its interface appears similar to the Gemini chatbot, yet maintains the traditional Google Search layout, which includes familiar filters such as Images, News, Shopping, and more. Additionally, a "dig deeper" text box allows users to continue their search based on the context provided.
In December 2024, the feature was already spotted in a mobile APK, showcasing its functionalities through voice input. Google had previously identified OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search as a primary competitor, but now faces various emerging challengers.
In a recent earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai announced that Google is committed to investing approximately $75 billion into AI. He mentioned that 2025 is expected to be a landmark year for search engine innovations.
