China Launches Investigation into Google Amid Rising Trade Tensions

Published February 4, 2025

China's antitrust authority has announced the initiation of an investigation into potential violations by the US technology giant, Google. This news was revealed during a time when trade tensions between the United States and China are escalating, particularly following recent tariff impositions by President Donald Trump on various Chinese goods.

The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) is the bureau overseeing this investigation. However, they have not provided further details regarding the specific nature of the probe, nor have they directly associated it with the ongoing tariff disputes.

Google's operations in China are quite limited due to various challenges. Most of its global services are blocked in the country, and its attempts to grow its presence have faced significant obstacles, including strong government backing for local competitors, concerns related to cybersecurity, and the complexities of meeting Chinese regulations around content moderation. This is further complicated by pressures from Western nations to confront what they describe as censorship by the Chinese government.

Google is not new to regulatory scrutiny around the world, including in its home country, the United States. For example, last August, a federal court concluded that Google holds a monopolistic position, using its dominance to suppress competition related to its search engine.

In the European Union, Google has faced substantial penalties from regulatory bodies and member states due to antitrust infringements, culminating in billions of euros in fines. Just recently, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority also initiated an investigation focused on Google's advertising business.

On the broader economic front, President Trump had enforced an additional 10% tariff on Chinese products. Although these measures were officially framed as part of emergency steps addressing issues like illegal immigration and drug trafficking, the immediate response from Beijing was a wave of counter-tariffs on various American goods, including hydrocarbons and agricultural machinery. Additionally, China lodged a formal complaint with the World Trade Organization in response to the tariffs.

Furthermore, the Chinese government placed restrictions on the export of crucial minerals such as tungsten, tellurium, and others, which are vital for advanced manufacturing. However, they have avoided directly linking these actions to the deteriorating trade relations with the United States.
