XPeng Motors Takes the Lead in New Car Sales

Published February 3, 2025

In the first month of this year, the landscape for new energy vehicle (NEV) makers saw a significant shift. XPeng Motors has overtaken Li Auto to claim the title of monthly sales champion.

On February 1st, XPeng Motors released its latest delivery figures, reporting a total of 30,350 new car deliveries in January. This marks an impressive increase of 268% compared to the same month last year. Notably, this is the third consecutive month in which XPeng Motors has delivered over 30,000 units. The surge in sales can be attributed to two key models: the MONA and the P7+. The MONA model alone has seen over 15,000 deliveries for the last two months, while the P7+ model, which launched two months ago, has reached more than 20,000 deliveries.

In contrast, Li Auto managed to deliver 29,927 new cars in January, falling just short of XPeng Motors by a little over 400 vehicles. This drop in ranking marks the end of Li Auto's reign as the top-selling NEV maker, a position it held for several months. As of January 31st, Li Auto's total cumulative delivery volume stood at 1,163,799 units.

Another competitor, Leapmotor, recorded 25,170 deliveries in January, representing a growth rate of 105%. Leapmotor has announced profit forecasts, highlighting that it achieved net profitability in the fourth quarter of 2024, reaching its goal of quarterly profitability one year ahead of schedule. This achievement makes Leapmotor the second new force in the industry to attain profitability.

Xiaomi's SU7 model also performed well, delivering over 20,000 vehicles for the fourth consecutive month. On January 25, Lei Jun, the founder and CEO of Xiaomi, stated during a live broadcast that the total delivery volume for the SU7 has surpassed 150,000 units. Looking ahead, Xiaomi aims to reach an annual delivery target of 300,000 units for its car segment by 2025.

NIO delivered 13,863 new cars in January, showing a year-on-year increase of 37.9%. Out of this, NIO's own brand contributed 7,951 new cars, while its ONVO brand added 5,912 new cars to the total.

Among the new energy brands launched by traditional car companies, VOYAH delivered 8,009 new cars in January, reflecting a 14% year-on-year growth. Avita achieved sales of 8,826 units in January, with a yearly growth rate exceeding 25%. Meanwhile, Zeekr reported 11,942 vehicle deliveries, and GAC AION reached global sales of 14,393 units in January.

It is essential to note that due to the Spring Festival holiday, many emerging electric vehicle manufacturers experienced a month-on-month decline in sales compared to December of the previous year. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers has observed that January 2025 had only 19 working days, which is three days fewer than both January last year and December last year. The automobile industry typically begins its holiday preparations early before the Spring Festival, leading to shortened effective production and sales periods in January.
