McDonald's Intensifies Promotions As Global Sales Fluctuate

Published April 30, 2024

McDonald’s is taking strategic steps to enhance its promotional and value messaging tactics faced with decelerating sales in the rapidly changing fast-food industry. Despite experiencing an uptick in U.S. sales during the first quarter, the company is addressing challenges that have surfaced in the Middle East and elsewhere due to diminishing sales and ongoing consumer boycotts.

US Market Lifts McDonald's Amidst Global Sales Pressure

The fast-food titan reported that its global same-store sales witnessed a modest increase of 1.9% in the January-March stretch, falling slightly short of the projected 2.1% raise anticipated by Wall Street analysts as per FactSet. In the U.S., a 2.5% rise in same-store sales was attributed to hiked prices and a growing appetite for delivery options. However, this was contrasted by a 0.2% dip in international franchised markets, marking the first same-store sales decline in this segment since 2020.

Boycotts in the Middle East Impact Sales

McDonald’s operations have been impacted by boycott movements across the Middle East and in predominantly Muslim countries like Indonesia and Malaysia. The cause of these boycotts traces back to last October, following announcements by McDonald's Israeli franchisee to provide free meals to Israeli soldiers in the Gaza conflict. Addressing the backlash, McDonald's has responded by acquiring Alyonal Limited, its Israeli franchisee, along with the 225 restaurants in the country – a move with undisclosed financial specifics.

Financial Performance Amidst the Backdrop of a Boycott

Despite the ongoing challenges, McDonald’s financial figures showed a 5% revenue spike to $6.17 billion in the first quarter, aligning with expectations from Wall Street. Net income climbed by 7% to reach $1.93 billion. Nonetheless, the earnings per share, adjusted for restructuring charges, were recorded at $2.70, narrowly missing the $2.72 forecast by analysts.

Reacting to the news, shares of McDonald’s fell by 1.5% in premarket trading on Tuesday.
