SoftBank's Masayoshi Son Predicts Early Arrival of AGI
SoftBank Group is making significant strides in artificial intelligence (AI) development. A major part of this effort is its involvement in a large investment initiative called Project Stargate, which aims to inject $500 billion into enhancing AI infrastructure in the United States, particularly for OpenAI. SoftBank is not only supporting this initiative but is also partnering with OpenAI to create a joint venture in Japan.
As part of this new collaboration, SoftBank plans to invest $3 billion to incorporate OpenAI's technology across its various companies. The centerpiece of this initiative is a new AI system named "Cristal intelligence," which is expected to transform how businesses operate by deploying AI agents to automate various tasks.
At a recent announcement event held in Tokyo, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son shared his thoughts on Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Previously, Son estimated that AGI would emerge within two to three years, but he now believes it will arrive "much earlier" than he initially thought. This change in perspective may be influenced by recent discussions with his new partner, Sam Altman, which have brought about new interpretations and definitions of AGI.
SoftBank elaborated on the capabilities of AI agents, stating that they would streamline everyday responsibilities traditionally handled by knowledge workers. For instance, Arm, a company under SoftBankâs umbrella known for designing chips and servers used in AI applications, aims to leverage Cristal Intelligence to enhance innovation and productivity. SoftBank Corp. intends to use the technology to automate over 100 million workflows, thereby increasing efficiency and opening up new business opportunities.
During the event, Son introduced Cristal Intelligence while showcasing a crystal ball, symbolizing his vision for the future of AI.
The new partnership, officially named "SB OpenAI Japan," will be co-owned by SoftBank and OpenAI, each holding a 50% stake. This joint venture plans to exclusively market Cristal Intelligence to major corporations within Japan.
