Alberta COVID Panel Issues Name Correction in Controversial Report
A recent report concerning Alberta's response to COVID-19 has attracted widespread criticism from the medical community. Released without prior notice, the report is part of the government's initiative to review how health data was collected and utilized during the pandemic. Many doctors believe that the recommendations within the report could potentially harm public health rather than protect it.
In a significant development, the panel assigned by the Alberta government has removed the name of Dr. John Conly from its COVID-19 report, citing it was included 'in error.' The report was updated to clarify that Dr. Conly had only been interviewed regarding an article referenced in the document, rather than serving as a contributor.
Dr. Conly, who is a physician and former head of medicine at the University of Calgary, publicly called for the removal of his name from the report. This correction reflects concerns that were raised following the report's release, which occurred on a Friday and was amended just a few days later.
The report itself spans 269 pages and controversially suggests the government halt COVID-19 vaccinations without complete disclosure of associated risks. It also calls for discontinuing vaccine use among healthy children and teenagers. Additionally, it recommends legislative changes that would allow doctors increased flexibility to prescribe alternative treatments during future health crises, arguing that previous regulations were overly strict on off-label medication use.
Among the suggestions put forth is the promotion of treatments such as ivermectin, despite the lack of scientific backing for its effectiveness against COVID-19. Many physicians across Canada have condemned the $2 million review as a source of dangerous misinformation, warning that it undermines trust in both the medical and scientific communities.
Dr. Shelley Duggan, president of the Alberta Medical Association, criticized the report, stating it contradicts decades of global scientific collaboration and consensus. Premier Danielle Smith established the panel in 2022 as part of an effort to reassess the province's COVID-19 strategy, having previously been a vocal opponent of many pandemic measures including vaccine mandates.
Dr. Gary Davidson, who led the review, holds a controversial stance, rejecting the notion of a scientific consensus regarding pandemic strategies. Questions remain about whether the provincial government will act upon any recommendations made in the report, with Health Minister Adriana LaGrange's office refraining from providing clear answers.
