Australian Shares Exhibit Strong Finish in 2023, Gaining 8% Despite Final Day Dip

Published December 29, 2023

Despite a subdued final trading day with a modest 0.3% drop, Australian shares ended 2023 on a high note. The year's last trading session saw the S&P/ASX 200 index close at 7,590.80 points. This minor setback did little to overshadow a strong December rally that marked the index's best monthly performance since November 2020, gaining 7.1% over the month, and culminating in an overall 7.8% increase for the year.

Rising Optimism Fuels December Rally

Investors' optimism grew in light of anticipated rate cuts by major central banks in the forthcoming year, augmenting the market sentiment and fueling a notable rally in Australian shares. Easing financial conditions and a shifting economic landscape continued to influence the equity market positively, as analysts maintained a bright outlook despite the day's lackluster trading results.

Market Sectors: Winners and Losers of 2023

Throughout the year, central banks played a crucial role in steering market sentiment with their monetary policy regulations, and the trend was no different as 2023 drew to a close. While some market sectors experienced a dip on the final day, their annual performance reflected broader gains. The mining sector, after a three-day surge, saw a decline of 0.7% corresponding with a dip in iron ore futures, yet reported an 11-month high with a monthly increase of 8.7%. Likewise, gold stocks, despite a 2% fall on Friday, registered a remarkable 24.5% annual growth, the sector's best in four years.

On the other hand, rate-sensitive financials saw a minor 0.2% decrease, with the leading Commonwealth Bank of Australia dropping by 0.4%. Nonetheless, the sector recorded impressive monthly and annual hikes. Energy stocks were not as fortunate, experiencing a 0.9% drop on the final trading day and an annual loss of 3.8%, as oil prices faced their first yearly decline in two years. Across the Tasman Sea, New Zealand's benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index concluded the year virtually unchanged but managed a 2.6% annual increase.
