Sharp Decline in PSU Stocks Wipes Out Rs 4.28 Lakh Crore of Investor Wealth
An abrupt downturn in public sector unit (PSU) stocks has led to a significant shrinkage in investor wealth, with a reported loss of Rs 4.28 lakh crore over the span of three trading sessions. The recent market activities have put a spotlight on the volatility within the PSU segment of the stock market, and the impact this has on overall market capitalisation.
Steep Losses for LIC
The most notable loss was observed in the shares of Life Insurance Corp. of India (LIC), which saw its valuation dip by a staggering Rs 79,000 crore. The sell-off in LIC shares represents the lion's share of the total decrease in investor wealth among PSUs during this period.
Other PSUs Facing Downturns
Alongside LIC, several other well-known PSUs have also witnessed significant declines. NHPC Ltd, Oil India Ltd, REC Ltd, and Steel Authority of India Ltd are among the top PSUs that have seen their share prices plummet, with NHPC Ltd alone experiencing a 23.65% drop over the same three days. Additionally, PSU banks have not been immune to this trend, with Indian Overseas Bank, UCO Bank, and Union Bank of India reporting considerable declines in market capitalisation.
Market Analysts Weigh In
Despite the recent market jitters, some market strategists and financial analysts like Soni Patnaik from JM Financial Services remain optimistic about the investment opportunities this dip presents. Patnaik suggests that the sell-off has opened a 'buy-on-dip' strategy for investors, especially for stocks such as NTPC, Coal India, and ONGC, anticipating a potential 5-6% upside from their current levels.
Growth of PSUs Under the Government's Watch
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has previously highlighted the augmented performance and valuation of PSUs over the past decade, mentioning their net worth increase from Rs 9.5 lakh crore to Rs 17 lakh crore. Even as the recent sell-off contradicts the broader growth narrative, Modi had praised the trust and performance enhancements in PSUs, pointing to the doubling of the BSE PSU index value in the past year.
Outlook and Perspectives on PSU Performance
While the short-term outlook for PSU stocks might seem grim due to the recent selloff, the long-term perspective tells a different story of growth and resilience. LIC's holding value of PSU stocks, in particular, has seen a notable rise of nearly Rs 1 lakh crore since October. Moreover, the insurer's shares hit a record high as they surged past the Rs 1,000 apiece mark, reflecting a robust increase in market capitalisation that crossed the Rs 6 lakh crore threshold.
