Etsy's Struggle: Sales Dip as Discretionary Spending Weakens

Published May 3, 2024

Etsy's stock fell sharply over the past week, with a 14% drop amidst broader market declines, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence data. The e-commerce platform, which focuses on handmade and vintage goods, saw its shares tumble as it revealed deteriorating sales trends in its Q1 report. The performance is part of a downward trajectory that has seen Etsy's stock plummet by nearly 30% in the year 2024, and almost 40% over the previous year.

Q1 Earnings: A Disheartening Signal

The recent slide in Etsy's share value was triggered by the company's first-quarter earnings, which did not meet Wall Street's expectations. During the quarter ending in March, Etsy saw approximately $3 billion in transaction volume. This marked a 4% fall in sales, a quicker decline than the 2% drop in the previous quarter, suggesting that Etsy's growth has yet to recover after two years of negative growth.

Etsy's CEO Josh Silverman attributed the disappointing performance to soft demand for discretionary products, which form the bulk of Etsy's offerings. The stagnant growth of Etsy's consumer base, which saw a less than 2% increase year-over-year and no change from the previous quarter, further highlighted the issue, with most new buyers coming from international markets.

Although Etsy remains profitable, its net profit margin has decreased to 10% from 12% the previous year, signaling declining efficiency.

Future Expectations and Strategy

Moving forward into the rest of 2024, Etsy's leaders forecast a modest improvement in sales growth but anticipate that the second quarter will likely echo the first, with a similar 4% drop in sales volumes. Despite the challenging conditions, Etsy plans to slash expenses and enhance the platform's shopping and selling experiences, aiming to rejuvenate profitability and eventually, sales volume. However, it seems the stock might continue to face pressure until tangible growth in merchandise volumes is evident.
