FPIs Sell Stocks Worth Rs 15,828 Crore This Week
This week, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have significantly reduced their holdings in the Indian stock market, selling shares worth approximately Rs 15,828 crore. This marks a considerable outflow of investment as FPIs have continued to be net sellers for the fifth consecutive day.
Recent Selling Trends
On Friday alone, FPIs offloaded stocks valued at about Rs 3,597.8 crore, according to provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.
Throughout this week, the combined total of shares sold by FPIs reached Rs 15,828.1 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) took advantage of the sell-off by purchasing stocks worth Rs 11,873.9 crore. This week marks a notable trend where DIIs continued to remain net buyers for the fourth consecutive day.
Market Overview
In December 2024, FPIs have so far exited the market with a total of Rs 4,121.2 crore, contrasted by the strong buying activity of DIIs which has totaled Rs 16,546.4 crore.
Looking back to November, FPIs sold shares totaling Rs 45,974.1 crore, while DIIs purchased stocks amounting to Rs 44,483.9 crore. The trend continued from October when FPIs also sold equities valued at a staggering Rs 1.14 lakh crore, against purchases by DIIs of Rs 1.07 lakh crore.
As of the latest updates for 2024, foreign institutions have been net buyers of Rs 6,770 crore worth of Indian equities, according to data from the National Securities Depository Ltd.
Market Reaction
The markets reflected these changes as the benchmark equity indices closed at their lowest in over a month. Concerns over a hawkish outlook from the US Federal Reserve have shaken global markets, contributing to a challenging environment for the Indian stock markets.
On Friday, the NSE Nifty 50 closed at 23,587.50, down 364.20 points or 1.52%, while the BSE Sensex declined by 1,176.46 points or 1.49%, ending at 78,041.59.
The total market capitalization of Nifty 50 companies decreased by approximately Rs 2.9 lakh crore, bringing its current valuation down to Rs 186.97 lakh crore.
