China Urges World to Advance Clean Energy and Green Transformation at COP28

Published December 2, 2023

In a significant appeal during the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP28, Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang has urged nations globally to boost renewable energy use and hasten the green transition to combat climate change more effectively. As a representative of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Ding delivered these key messages at the World Climate Action Summit in Dubai.

Global Gathering for Climate Action

The conference taking place in Dubai, UAE, has attracted over 70,000 participants from across the globe. From November 30 to December 12, delegates are assessing global progress towards reducing the threat of climate warming. A concerning report by the UN disclosed that world is heading towards a temperature rise between 2.5 to 2.9 degrees Celsius by the century's end, overshooting the Paris Agreement's 1.5 degrees Celsius target.

Ding Xuexiang's Three-Point Proposal

Ding highlighted humanity's intertwined fate in the face of climate challenges, emphasizing a united front in the fight against climatic threats. His three-point proposal begins with practicing true multilateralism, adhering firmly to the established goals of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the beliefs of the Paris Agreement. Secondly, he advocates for the acceleration of green transformation through renewable energy and more sustainable traditional energy use to create greener lifestyles. The third point focuses on strengthening the execution of actions and honoring existing commitments, particularly urging developed nations to provide support to their developing counterparts.

China's Commitment to Climate Change Mitigation

China's dedication to the climate cause is seen in its national goals of peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2060. Implementing carbon reduction targets in its economic strategy, China has significantly reduced its carbon intensity. The country's afforestation efforts have also increased its forestry coverage, boosting overall carbon sequestration capabilities.

Leading the charge in renewable energy, China has installed over 1,213 gigawatts of green power and is repeatedly topping global charts in new energy vehicle production and sales. Champions of solar panels, wind turbines, and lithium-ion batteries, China is set to play an integral role in the decarbonization of the energy sector worldwide.

Further reflecting China's role in the global climate battleground, cooperation is extended through numerous agreements with developing countries with projects and training programs designed to address climate change. Notably, China and the United States reaffirmed their commitment to collaborative climate crisis mitigation through the Sunnylands Statement.

China's international efforts also feature prominently in its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), through which it supports other developing countries in their initiatives to manage climate change impacts.
