JSR Expects Boost in Chip Sales from DeepSeek's AI Technology

Published January 31, 2025

A Chinese start-up called DeepSeek is bringing affordable AI models to the market, which is anticipated to create significant demand for semiconductors in the long run. Kenichi Emoto, who is an executive officer at JSR, a Japan-based chip materials supplier, has shared insights on this trend.

JSR specializes in providing photoresists, which are essential materials used in photolithography, crucial for producing advanced chips. These materials are vital for the extreme ultraviolet light lithography machines manufactured by ASML Holding. These machines play a key role in creating the most sophisticated semiconductor devices.

Recently, DeepSeek has gained notable attention by achieving the top spot in the US App Store, even surpassing established AI competitors like ChatGPT. This development reflects the growing interest and potential in low-cost AI technology.

In an interview, Emoto expressed that any advancements in AI technology are beneficial. He stated, "Even if DeepSeek rewrites the industry map, it won’t mean a big change for us. The emergence of new AI technologies is a positive direction." This perspective indicates that while new players like DeepSeek emerge, JSR remains focused on its role in the semiconductor supply chain.

With the rise of affordable AI systems, it is expected that demand for semiconductors will increase significantly, contributing positively to the market and the growth of companies like JSR.
