Australia's Q4 Business Investment Increases, Boosting Economic Prospects

Published February 29, 2024

Australia witnessed an uptick in business investment during the December quarter, reaching an eight-year peak predominantly due to the expansion within the mining industry. Subsequent improvements in capital expenditure outlooks further posit a positive scenario for the country's economic growth.

Rise in Business Investment

The latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics released on Thursday indicate a 0.8 percent real-term escalation in private capital spending during the fourth quarter, compared to the third. This climb is principally attributed to the mining sector, which itself saw a 1.1 percent increase.

Future Spending Projections

Looking ahead, businesses have revised their expenditure forecasts for the 2023-2024 fiscal year to A$177.7 billion, marking a 4 percent hike from previous estimations. Projections for the 2024-2025 fiscal year start at A$145.6 billion, although these figures traditionally undergo upward revisions as time progresses.
