The Elusive Artificial Intelligence Boom: An Overview of Current Trends and Future Expectations

Published January 18, 2024

While the year 2023 marked significant advancements in artificial intelligence, many are still anticipating the arrival of an AI boom similar to the tech surge of the previous decade. Despite the introduction of several innovative AI products, the anticipated industry-shaking boom has not yet occurred, leading to questions about when and how it will manifest.

The State of AI in 2023

Last year saw the release of AI products at an unprecedented rate, with developments in the field making consistent news. These advancements demonstrated the technology's potential, yet the transformative boom predicted has not fully materialized. Christopher Alexander of Pioneer Development Group shared his insights, suggesting that while 2023 amazed many with the capabilities of AI, the coming year may involve reassessing the limitations and practical applications of AI technologies. He indicated a belief that AI will weave into the fabric of daily life and that previous grand predictions have contributed to a market misunderstanding.

Industry Expectations and Predictions

Phil Siegel from the Center for Advanced Preparedness and Threat Response Simulation points out that we are still in the early stages of AI tool development, yet signals of an impending boom can be seen, especially in AI infrastructure such as chips and supplies. However, Siegel warns that a substantial boom will take time, with many new products being priced too high for mass adoption. The evolution of AI requires not only the advancement of technology but also affordable access for wider use.

On the other hand, some experts argue that the AI boom is already occurring in less obvious ways. Samuel Mangold-Lenett believes that AI's widespread utility is clear, and its integration into daily life is advancing swiftly, though the public may not be fully conscious of AI's involvement in their routine interactions. He mentioned that even if it's not directly noticeable, AI's presence is growing steadily.

Consumer Interaction and Product Development

Despite the growth in AI technology, such as chatbots, the average consumer rarely engages with these platforms due to their current limitations and crude interfaces. Jake Denton from the Heritage Foundation's Tech Policy Center describes the gap between the AI vision and present reality. He notes that while the potential is vast, current applications are still relatively narrow. Nonetheless, developers are working to refine and integrate AI technologies into everyday life, promising significant changes for the future.

As we move forward, 2024 is poised to be a pivotal year for AI technology. It will become clearer if the ongoing advancements constitute a true revolution or just an enhancement for current productivity tools.
