Escalating China-Taiwan Tensions Pose Threat to Tech Giants

Published February 10, 2024

The ongoing geopolitical tensions between China under Xi Jinping's leadership and Taiwan are emerging as a significant concern for the major technology companies, often referred to as the 'Magnificent Seven.' Insight from Jeremy Grantham's investment management firm, GMO, suggests that these companies face a shared risk that could have substantial implications on their operations and revenues.

The Magnificent Seven at Risk

The cohort, including Apple Inc. (AAPL), Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN), NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA), Tesla Inc. (TSLA), Meta Platforms Inc. (META), Alphabet Inc. (GOOG, GOOGL), and Microsoft Corporation (MSFT), heavily depends on the semiconductor industry in China and Taiwan. With the tensions escalating, access to vital technologies and the supply chain could be threatened. GMO's letter to investors, co-written by Ben Inker and John Pease, underlines the pivotal nature of China and Taiwan's chip industries, especially as these companies increase their investments in artificial intelligence (AI).

Revenue Exposure and Supply Chain Concerns

The average revenue exposure to China and Taiwan for these tech giants is nearly 20%, and four of them have strong manufacturing ties with Foxconn, a leading Taiwanese tech firm. With AI's continued growth, the reliance on Taiwan, known for being the world's top chip supplier, becomes more acute. The threat of restricted access could, therefore, imply a profound impact on their business models and profitability.

Geopolitical Tensions on the Rise

Recent activities have heightened the sense of unease. China's increased military activities around Taiwan and issues concerning cross-strait relations have led to tension in the Asia-Pacific region. Taiwan's suspension of group tours to China and their reaction to changes in flight paths near the Taiwan Strait are responses to what they view as potential military threats.

The concern from GMO points to a significant factor that investors may need to heed: the collective influence of these U.S.-based tech superstars on global indexes versus the smaller combined weight of China and Taiwan. This indicates the potential for a global ripple effect should the situation worsen.
