Taiwan's Commitment to Increased Military Spending
Taiwan President Lai Ching-te has announced plans to increase military spending in response to concerns over threats from China. This decision is also aimed at reassuring U.S. President Donald Trump of Taiwan's commitment to its defense.
During a news briefing held in Taipei on Friday, Lai stated that Taiwan intends to raise its military expenditure to 3% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, he did not specify when this increase would commence. Previously, Taiwan had projected a record defense budget for 2025, which would amount to approximately 2.45% of its estimated GDP, continuing the trend of recent years.
"Taiwan is willing to cooperate with the U.S. in every aspect,” stated Lai, emphasizing the importance of the U.S.-Taiwan relationship. His comments were made following a meeting with national security officials. He also mentioned that Taiwan plans to increase its investment in the U.S. and purchase more American products. The government is currently in communication with the Trump administration regarding these matters.
