Australia's Employment Takes a Hit with 65.1K Jobs Lost in December

Published January 18, 2024

In an unexpected turn of events, Australia's job market saw a decrease in employment numbers for December, with the economy shedding 65.1k positions. This was in stark contrast to the anticipated growth of 15.4k jobs. The employment decline was largely attributed to the significant reduction in full-time roles, which plummeted by 106.6k, while the part-time sector experienced a rise with an additional 41.4k jobs.

Unemployment Rate Stable Despite Job Losses

Despite the decline in job creation, Australia maintained its unemployment rate at 3.9%, a figure that met analysts' forecasts. The participation rate dipped slightly by 0.4% to 66.8%. Furthermore, there was a 0.5% month-over-month decrease in total monthly hours worked across the board.

Labour Market Remains Tight

David Taylor, the head of labour statistics at the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), indicated that the employment market had exhibited strong growth in October and November with an upturn of 117k jobs, and considered the sharp decline in December as a reflection of altered employment growth patterns towards the year's end compared to previous years. Over the span of the past year, employment rose on average by 32k each month. Taylor also highlighted that the current state of the labour market, with low unemployment and underemployment rates alongside high participation and employment-to-population ratios, suggests a continued tightness in the market.
