TSMC Re-enters Top 10 Most Valuable Global Companies Amid AI Chip Demand Surge

Published March 11, 2024

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), a leading player in the semiconductor industry, has recently achieved a significant milestone by re-securing its position among the top 10 most valuable companies in the world. This comes following a spectacular boost in its stock value, driven by the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

Impressive Growth Despite Market Challenges

Amid an industry faced with dynamic demands, TSMC's stock witnessed a substantial rally, which saw the company’s market capitalization soar to record heights. A particularly noteworthy 14% increase in the stock’s value occurred last week, propelling TSMC's worth to an unprecedented level. Even after a slight 2% dip in early trading the following Monday, the company's market value remained significantly high at $634 billion, surpassing that of industry rivals like Broadcom Inc.

Analysts Project Continued Progress

Financial experts, including those from notable institutions like Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase & Co., predict a favorable trajectory for TSMC. Their confidence stems from the chipmaker’s revenue upsurge of 9.4% in the early part of the year, attributed mainly to the burgeoning AI space which continued to demand high-end semiconductor products. Even the potential decline in iPhone sales has not dampened the optimistic outlook for TSMC's revenue growth.

A Bright Future Powered by AI

The substantial interest in generative AI has been a boon for the global chip industry, with TSMC at the forefront of benefiting from this trend. According to Morgan Stanley analysts, generative AI represents a clear avenue for growth for TSMC, and the company’s ongoing global expansion further alleviates any geopolitical concerns. Investors appear to share this sentiment, as indicated by the favorable put-to-call ratio of TSMC’s American Depository Receipts in the options market, signaling an inclination towards bullish positions.
