Published January 7, 2025

Microsoft has made a significant announcement regarding a $3 billion investment in India, focusing on developing cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. This investment was revealed by CEO Satya Nadella in Bengaluru, India, on January 7th.

The funding, which will be allocated over the next two years, is set to establish new data centers in India. This move aims to enhance the company’s services and support the rapidly growing AI ecosystem in the country.

As part of this investment, Microsoft also launched its ADVANTA(I)GE program, which targets upskilling 10 million people in India in AI by the year 2030. Nadella emphasized the nation’s emergence as a leader in AI innovation, stating, “India is rapidly becoming a leader in AI innovation, unlocking new opportunity across the country.”

The investments are intended to ensure that organizations and individuals in India reap the benefits of the AI advancements. Microsoft currently employs over 20,000 individuals in India and has three data center campuses. A fourth data center is anticipated to launch by 2026.

Initially, the ADVANTA(I)GE program was introduced in India in 2024 as part of Microsoft’s Global Skills for Social Impact initiative, which aimed to train 2 million people in AI by 2025. With the success of the first phase, which exceeded its goal by upskilling 2.4 million people within just one year, Microsoft decided to expand the program.

Additionally, Microsoft Research Lab announced the creation of an AI Innovation Network aimed at partnering with local businesses. This network will facilitate collaboration on research projects and provide companies with access to Microsoft’s research and technology, further integrating its solutions into the Indian market.

Furthermore, Microsoft entered into a memorandum of understanding with SaaSBoomi, a community of B2B start-ups in India. Together, they aim to impact over 5,000 start-ups and 10,000 entrepreneurs while upskilling more than 150,000 employees in start-ups through tailored workshops over the next five years.

Puneet Chandok, the president of Microsoft India and South Asia, remarked on the company's journey in making AI a reality in India over the past year. He stated that the latest investments reinforce their commitment to harnessing India's immense potential and equipping the nation with the necessary resources and skills to thrive in the international marketplace. Chandok expressed confidence that AI will continue to unlock new opportunities in the future, ensuring communities across India have the technology and infrastructure needed to succeed in the AI era.

This investment by Microsoft comes at a time when the demand for cloud services and AI capabilities is surging in the Asia-Pacific region, further highlighting the growing importance of technological advancements in supporting economies.
