Egypt Advocates for Global Cooperation to Mitigate Red Sea Tensions and Safeguard Maritime Routes

Published January 13, 2024

Egypt has made an urgent appeal on Friday for collective international and regional actions aimed at reducing the growing tensions in the Red Sea area and for taking measures to protect the crucial maritime routes.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has issued a statement expressing grave concern over the intensifying military operations in the Red Sea, and the impact of airstrikes taking place in parts of Yemen. This atmosphere of aggression underscores the pressing need to address conflicts that could escalate and spread, complicating the situation further.

There is particular worry about the ongoing Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip, with Egypt highlighting how these activities have been signaling the potential for regional conflict to widen, posing severe risks not just to the local stability but also to international peace and security.

Emphasizing the urgent requirement for a 'comprehensive ceasefire,' Egypt calls for an end to the war on Palestinian civilians, which is a crucial step towards curtailing any further regional instability and conflicts. The continuation of such conflicts threatens the safety and security of international navigation through these leading waterways.

Egypt's call to action comes at a time when maritime security is at risk; the Houthi group in Yemen has escalated its military initiatives in the Red Sea and near the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Their operations include using armed boats, drones, and missiles to disrupt commercial shipping, particularly targeting links to Israel.

Responding to Houthi aggression, early Friday, both the United States and Britain conducted airstrikes on Houthi military locations in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa and in other regions under their control. This action was in retaliation to the rebels' attacks in the strategically vital Red Sea.
