UK Retailers Surge with Strong January Sales Following Disappointing December

Published February 16, 2024

Leaping back from a dismal sales performance in December, UK retailers struck a remarkable recovery last month. Sales surged to their highest point in nearly three years, delivering a welcome boost to the sector.

Retail Recovery Post-Holiday Slump

Following a particularly lackluster December, the retail industry in the UK has made a significant comeback. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that retail sales volumes, comprising both physical stores and online platforms, saw a 3.4% increase in January. This jump starkly contrasts with the 3.3% drop witnessed in the final month of the previous year.

A Record Rise Since Lockdown Easing

This bounce-back is the most substantial monthly growth since April 2021, which was the time when shops deemed non-essential reopened post the third lockdown amid the COVID-19 crisis. Heather Bovill from the ONS has indicated that the rebound in January negated the slump in December, with sales getting back to the levels seen before the year-end dip.

Yet, it's important to note that, despite this resurgence, the retail sales figures are still trailing behind pre-pandemic standards.

Sales Exceed Analysts' Expectations

The revival of retail sales didn't just bring about relief but also surpassed economic forecasts. Experts predicted a more conservative 1.5% improvement, which the actual figures far outshone.

Gains Across Most Retail Sectors

Food retailers, in particular, enjoyed a huge part of this resurgence with a 3.4% upswing in sales. The sales growth was widespread, bolstering almost every sector of retail, especially supermarkets. Discounts offered in January largely fuelled this sector-wide boost. Various stores, including household goods outlets, sports equipment sellers, and department stores, enjoyed robust trade amidst promotions.

Additionally, lower fuel prices contributed to a solid month in fuel sales. Nevertheless, clothing retailers did not partake in this trend of growth, having faced a tougher month in comparison.
