U.S. Retail Sales Experience a Moderate Increase in November

Published December 14, 2023

As the holiday season began to unfold, American consumers increased their expenditures in November, continuing a positive trend in retail spending. Monthly figures indicate a moderate rise in retail sales, which climbed 0.3% from October, surpassing some market expectations. Although this increase may appear slight, it follows a revised 0.2% drop in October, hinting at the resilient consumer purchasing power despite fluctuating economic conditions.

Strong Performers and Laggards

Various sectors witnessed differing performance levels in the recent sales data. Restaurants enjoyed a significant uptick of 1.6% in business, suggesting that dining out remains a popular choice for Americans. Furniture stores also saw an encouraging increase of 0.9%. Online retailers weren't left behind, with e-commerce sales climbing by 1%. In contrast, not all industries experienced growth; electronic and appliance outlets faced a decline of 1.1% in sales. Department stores, too, reported a notably reduced number - down by 2.5%. Importantly, these sales figures have not been adjusted for inflation, providing a raw view of consumer activity.

Wider Economic Indicators

The propensity for Americans to spend has not dramatically declined following a robust summer of consumer expenditure, and data from the July-September quarter showed a remarkable surge in spending. Moreover, employment numbers and inflation rates suggest improved economic stability. Recently released employment figures revealed the addition of 199,000 jobs in November, combined with a descending unemployment rate to 3.7%. Concurrently, inflation has seen a significant deceleration, down from a worrisome 9.1% to 3.2% over a year, tapering above the ideal range but contributing to a positive outlook that the feared recession may be avoidable.

Despite the encouraging signs, Americans' sentiment towards the economy remains somewhat pessimistic. The University of Michigan's Index of Consumer Sentiment, which provides insight into household attitudes, showed a slight shift for the better. The early figures for December suggest an enhancement in mood, potentially tied to the perception of easing inflation.
