AMD’s Desktop CPU Market Share Rises Significantly in One Year

Published November 7, 2024

AMD has seen a remarkable increase in its desktop CPU market share, jumping by almost 10 percent over the past year, according to an analyst report released on Thursday. This growth comes after AMD's successful launch of its latest desktop gaming CPU.

Mercury Research, a firm that monitors the market share of PC CPUs from companies like AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm, reported significant gains across most CPU market segments. AMD shared a part of this report with the media, which has also been confirmed by Mercury Research.

Typically, due to the small market presence of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X CPUs, any market share increases for AMD often correspond to declines in Intel's share. AMD's desktop market share now stands at 28.7 percent, marking an increase of 9.6 percentage points compared to the previous year. In the mobile CPU segment, AMD's market share has climbed to 22.3 percent, a rise of 2.8 percentage points. Usually, Intel holds about 80 percent of the total market while AMD captures the remaining 20 percent. This trend is somewhat consistent in overall client processors, where AMD accounted for 23.9 percent of all client CPUs sold during the period.

In the desktop segment, AMD shows strong momentum with its existing lineup of Ryzen processors, including the 7000X, 8000G, and the 9000X series, despite mixed reviews for the 9000X and issues related to Windows updates affecting performance. The market data reported by Mercury encompasses sales from the past year, but the outlook remains optimistic as AMD recently released its Ryzen 9000X3D chips, which have received positive feedback for outperforming Intel's top offerings.

Meanwhile, Intel faces significant challenges, including staff layoffs and disappointing financial results in its latest earnings report. Analysts are closely evaluating Intel's foundry strategy as the company has reported not receiving funding from the CHIPS Act aimed at supporting the construction of new semiconductor facilities in the United States. Future political changes may also impact this funding scenario.

The segment of the Mercury Research report concerning server revenue indicates that AMD's market share by revenue in servers reached a new high of 33.9 percent, although the report does not include revenue from semi-custom chips sold to game consoles and chips for Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
