Stock Market Holidays 2024: Comprehensive Guide to Indian BSE and NSE Closures

Published January 1, 2024

In 2024, traders and investors taking part in the Indian stock market will experience a total of 14 holidays, a slight increase from the previous year. Both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will observe these days off from trading activities. The holiday list starts with Republic Day on January 26, giving the stock market participants a day off.

Month-by-Month Market Holidays

February offers no breaks for the stock market, but March makes up for it with three holidays: Maha Shivaratri on March 8, Holi on March 25, and Good Friday on March 29. As the calendar progresses, April has a cluster of religious and national commemorations with the stock market closed on April 10 for Eid Al Fitr, and then April 17 for Ram Navami. Maharashtra Day is the solitary holiday on May 1, followed by Bakri Id on June 17.

Mid-year, July 17 marks a holiday for Muharram, and Independence Day is celebrated with a closure on August 15. The festive mood continues into September with Ganesh Chaturthi on September 7. October sees two holidays with Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 and Dussehra on October 13. The festival of lights, Diwali, leads to closures on November 1 and the celebrated Guru Nanak's Birthday on November 15. The year concludes with Christmas on December 25, bringing cheer and a pause to trading.
