Malaysia Demands Swift Removal of Containers by Israeli Shipping Firm ZIM

Published December 21, 2023

In a recent statement, Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke conveyed the urgency for the Israeli-based ZIM shipping company to take action on thousands of transhipment containers marooned within the country. A particular buildup has been noted at Port Klang, with as many as 4,000 containers awaiting attention. The company is under pressure to expedite their removal following a new governmental directive.

Immediate Ban on Docking

Malaysia has recently enacted a ban that immediately bars ZIM-operated vessels from docking at any Malaysian port. This move comes as part of larger restrictions against the Israeli company amidst tensions between the nations. As a consequence, ZIM must promptly collaborate with alternate shipping firms to ensure their stranded containers are transported to their respective destinations without further delay.

Allowances for Logistics

While the mandate is firm, Loke acknowledged that some leeway is necessary due to the logistical complexity involved in transferring such a large number of containers, all aimed for diverse locations. The timeframe for this operation, however, remains tightly constrained.

Malaysia's Standpoint

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has vocalized support for the government's decision, indicating an emphasis on nation's stance over potential logistical challenges. The administration believes these measures will not have a detrimental impact on Malaysia's trading activities and sees it as a necessary policy direction.
