Milan's FTSE MIB Reaches Highest Point Since 2008 as Pirelli Strengthens Its Position

Published December 5, 2023

The Italian stock market benchmark, the FTSE MIB, soared to its highest level since 2008, ending a recent session above the remarkable 30,000 points mark. This surge was in line with positive trends across other European stock exchanges, with the exception of London which experienced a slight pullback.

US Job Data Influences Market Sentiment

Market sentiment was influenced by US labor market data, suggesting a possible slow down as job openings decreased. This led to predictions that major central banks might put an end to rate hikes. Specifically, US job openings in October saw a drop to 8.73 million, which was below the expected 9.3 million figure.

European Markets in Green

European stock markets mostly ended in positive territory. Paris and Frankfurt's indices saw gains, while London's FTSE 100 experienced a minor dip. Notably, the German DAX reached a record high during the session. Back in Italy, mid and small-cap indices, as well as the Italy Growth index, also closed with gains.

Pirelli & C Accelerates on Positive Analyst Upgrade

Pirelli & C took the spotlight with a 4.9% increase in its stock value after earning an upgrade from UBS from 'neutral' to 'buy'. The positive outlook from UBS was accompanied by a raised target price, reflecting confidence in the company's trajectory.

Strong Performances and Corporate Moves

Other notable Italian market movers included Iveco with a 3% increase, indicative of the continuing success of its share buyback strategy. Saipem also saw a healthy rise in its stock value. On the environmental front, Eni gained momentum with the signing of a new sustainability-linked credit facility, aimed to enhance the company's financial flexibility and sustainability commitments.

On the downside, Leonardo and Nexi faced declines, while on the mid-cap front, Maire Tecnimont rebounded with an impressive gain, alongside other notable performers like Saras and Pharmanutra. Meanwhile, Unieuro surged over 11% following strategic acquisition news.

Technological advancements and innovations continued to shape the market with Piaggio valuing its Vespa brand significantly higher than previous estimates. This underscores the brand's growth and appeal. In the small-cap segment, algoWatt received a financial boost for its Digital Energy Service Provider project and logistics provider Saccheria F.lli Franceschetti proposed a dividend payment, showcasing strong financial health.

Market watchers are keeping a close eye on upcoming macroeconomic releases, including factory orders, construction PMIs, retail sales, and central bank announcements, which are likely to influence future trading sessions.

Investors remain attentive to movements in foreign exchange rates, oil prices, and precious metals, with the euro dipping slightly against the dollar, and Brent crude oil experiencing a minor price decrease.
