Sony Increases Profit Forecast Following Strong Game Sales
TOKYO (AP) — Japanese electronics and entertainment giant Sony announced a 3% increase in its profits for the October to December period on Thursday, prompting the company to raise its profit forecast for the entire fiscal year.
During this quarterly period, Sony reported a profit of 373.7 billion yen (approximately $2.4 billion), up from 364 billion yen from the same period last year. The company also saw an 18% increase in quarterly sales, reaching 4.4 trillion yen (about $29 billion), supported mainly by strong performance in its financial services, gaming, and music divisions.
For the nine months ending in December, Sony experienced a 21% rise in profits, totaling 943.9 billion yen ($6 billion), compared to 781.6 billion yen for the same timeframe last year. The company's overall sales for these nine months increased by 8%, amounting to 10.3 trillion yen ($67 billion).
As a result of these solid financial results, Sony has revised its profit projection for the full year upwards, estimating it will reach 1.08 trillion yen ($7 billion), up from its previous forecast of 980 billion yen ($6.3 billion) made in November. This new forecast also reflects an 11% increase compared to the profit recorded during the previous fiscal year.
The upward revision in profit was attributed to favorable currency exchange rates and a strong demand for its online services. Sony's PlayStation 5 gaming console continues to perform well, now in its fifth year on the market, although there have been no announcements regarding a possible successor.
Overall, Sony’s strong financial results showcase its robust performance in the gaming sector and other business areas, reinforcing the company's position in the highly competitive electronics and entertainment industry.
