US-Backed Syrian Forces Call for Enhanced Air Defenses After Lethal Drone Attack

Published February 8, 2024

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a key ally in the US-led offensive against the Islamic State, have urged the deployment of additional air defenses in northeast Syria. This comes in response to a fatal drone strike that claimed the lives of six SDF members, an attack they attribute to pro-Iran groups.

Escalation of Regional Conflict

Mazloum Abdi, the commander of the SDF, described the targeting of their encampments by drone strikes as a 'dangerous development.' The drone assault adds to a sequence of hostile acts aimed at US and SDF positions across eastern Syria, with Iran-affiliated militias intensifying their operations.

Defensive Measures Required

The SDF's plea for enhanced aerial defense capabilities underscores the rising need to protect forces from growing threats in the region. Abdi emphasized that technical upgrades and more air defense systems are now necessary. While the US has pledged efforts to prevent future attacks, the Pentagon has yet to officially comment.

US Military Presence in Spotlight

The SDF, led by Kurdish fighters and including Arab units, controls a sizable portion of Syrian territory. Speculation on a potential US troop withdrawal has been met with assurances of ongoing support, but Abdi cautions that their absence in the future could exacerbate threats from Iran-supported factions, ISIS, and Turkey.

The complexities of a potential withdrawal and the subsequent alignment of the SDF were also touched on by Abdi, who rejected the idea of a long-term collaboration with Syrian government forces, questioning their ability to counter IS.
