US Conducts Retaliatory Strikes on Iran-Linked Targets in the Middle East

Published February 3, 2024

In a series of military engagements, the United States struck over 85 Iran-linked targets across Iraq, Syria, and the Red Sea regions. This significant retaliatory action comes in response to continued assaults on American forces by Iranian-backed militia groups.

Military Actions in Iraq and Syria

Late on a Friday night, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) executed airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, targeting the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force and its supporting terror factions. Employing sophisticated aircraft and precision munitions, more than 85 sites were hit in the operation. These strikes took aim at various facilities including command and control centers, intelligence operations, weapon storage sites, and supply networks tied to the militant groups and their Iranian sponsors who pose a threat to US and Coalition troops.

Israel Intercepts Houthi Missile

The Israeli military, aiming to protect its territory, launched its Arrow defense system to intercept a missile fired by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi rebels toward the southern city of Eilat. Fortunately, due to this defensive measure, no casualties or property damage ensued. The interception occurred over the Red Sea, underscoring the system's reach and effectiveness.

In a related defensive measure, Israeli forces also targeted Iranian positions near Damascus in an effort to disrupt the flow of arms to Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

US Ensures Maritime Security

Further reflecting the day's tensions, US naval forces acted against unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) perceived as threats in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea. The USS Carney (DDG 64) and the USS Laboon (DDG 58), along with F/A-18 fighter jets, successfully neutralized a number of UAVs, thereby ensuring the safety of naval and merchant vessels in the area. These operations highlight CENTCOM's commitment to maintaining freedom of navigation and securing international waters.

Background of Regional Tensions

Incidents involving attacks on US forces and bases by Iran-affiliated groups have escalated since October 2023, with at least 165 such events recorded. A significant trigger for this uptick in aggression was the conflict instigated by Hamas, an Iranian proxy in Gaza, which led to severe atrocities in southern Israel including over a thousand casualties and numerous abductions.
