Mass Resignation Threat at OpenAI Following Leadership Shake-Up

Published November 21, 2023

In a shocking turn of events at OpenAI, the artificial intelligence powerhouse was faced with a mass threat of resignation after a major management upheaval. Roughly 500 out of 700 employees, equating to about 71%, have threatened to resign en masse. This ultimatum was presented following the dismissal of Sam Altman, which has sent ripples throughout the company.

Leadership Changes and Employee Reaction

After Sam Altman was let go from his position at OpenAI, there was a swift response from the employees, who have shown substantial loyalty to their former leader. The board opted for a quick replacement, appointing Emmett Shear, previously of Twitch, as the interim CEO. An internal memo revealed that Altman's departure was due to a 'breakdown in communication' with the board, leading to a decisive change in leadership that caught many by surprise.

Employee Ultimatum and Internal Conflict

The employees have voiced their demands in a letter that not only seeks the resignation of the board but also the reinstatement of Sam Altman, alongside former President Greg Brockman. High-profile figures like Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati and Chief Data Scientist Ilya Sutskever have expressed their intent to remain at OpenAI despite the ongoing dispute. Sutskever, in particular, voiced regret over his role in the board's decision, pledging to do everything in his power to reunite the company.

Responses from Altman and Microsoft

Amid the turmoil, Sam Altman and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella have attempted to assuage concerns over OpenAI's potential collapse. While Altman emphasized his commitment to the organization's future, Nadella remained open to employees either staying with OpenAI or joining Microsoft, suggesting, however, that OpenAI's governance would need to change regardless of where Altman ends up.

Investors' Concern and Legal Considerations

Some of OpenAI’s investors, worried about the possible financial repercussions of these internal conflicts, are considering legal action against the company's board. The prospect of losing investments worth hundreds of millions of dollars looms large for these investors. Notably, Microsoft holds a 49% stake in OpenAI's for-profit venture, while the remaining shares are distributed among other investors and ultimately tethered by its non-profit parent organization.
