Mass Employee Threat of Resignation at OpenAI After Sam Altman's Dismissal
On Monday, the tech world was shaken when around 500 out of 700 employees (approximately 71%) at OpenAI threatened to resign. This bold stance came as a reaction to the board's decision to dismiss their leader, Sam Altman, and the uncertainty that followed.
Dispute Leads to Threats of Mass Resignation
Reports surfaced that a large group of OpenAI employees is considering resignation and possibly joining a new division at Microsoft led by their former CEO, Sam Altman. This situation arose after the OpenAI board ousted Altman, citing a 'failure of communication' as the reason behind their decision. Despite some executives, including Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati, Chief Data Scientist Ilya Sutskever, and Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap, deciding to stay, the unrest among the majority of the staff seems palpable.
Following the dismissal, OpenAI moved swiftly to appoint Emmett Shear, the former head of Twitch, as the interim CEO. An internal memo revealed on Sunday night confirmed the new appointment, marking an end to speculation about Altman's potential return to the organization.
The Board's Decision Faces Backlash
Employees demanded the board's resignation and reinstatement of Sam Altman in a letter revealed by sources. The document, which saw signatures from high-profile employees such as Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever, highlights the staff's discontent with the board's decision.
Sutskever expressed regret over his participation in the board's actions, emphasizing his dedication to the company and its achievements, promising to do whatever he could to reunify OpenAI.
In the wake of these events, both Altman and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella have publicly addressed concerns over the potential fallout at OpenAI. Altman reassured that his primary focus remains on the continuity of OpenAI, while Nadella communicated his willingness to retain talent either at OpenAI or welcome them to Microsoft. He also noted that regardless of Altman's position, governance changes at OpenAI were necessary.
Legal and Financial Concerns Arise
There are rising legal and financial concerns among investors at OpenAI, creators of the revolutionary ChatGPT. Some investors have begun to seek legal counsel to explore their options following the shakeup. This unrest roots from the fear of losing significant investments in the AI startup. Microsoft holds a 49% stake in OpenAI's profit-seeking unit, with another 49% distributed among other investors and employees, and the remaining 2% owned by the nonprofit parent organization of OpenAI.
