Pentagon Asserts Stability in Israel-Gaza Conflict Amidst Regional Unrest

Published January 18, 2024

U.S. Pentagon officials have asserted that the conflicts involving Israel and militant group Hamas remain contained to the Gaza region, despite a spike in violence across the Middle East. This statement comes at a time when the region is facing increased tensions following American-led attacks on Houthi forces in Yemen, which led to subsequent retaliation against U.S.-flagged vessels.

During a press briefing, Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder emphasized that the U.S. is actively collaborating with allies to counter future aggression and to prevent the current skirmish between Israel and Hamas from escalating into a wider regional discord.

"We currently assess that the fight between Israel and Hamas continues to remain contained in Gaza," stated Ryder. He also mentioned that while there have been attacks involving U.S.-owned merchant ships, these incidents are being addressed with the same aim of regional containment.

Although details remain undisclosed due to security reasons, it was revealed that recent U.S. and U.K. military strikes have significantly, but not completely, damaged the Houthi militants' capacity to conduct maritime strikes, with an estimation that only between 20% and 30% of their ammunitions have been disabled so far.

The Pentagon recognizes the persistence of threats, as evidenced by the latest hostile actions against commercial vessels. The U.S. has also strongly condemned Iran's increase in violence, which has included missile and drone strikes in various locations, causing civilian casualties.
